The Cyclones (6-0, 3-0 Big 12) are opening their season with a six-win streak for the first time since 1938, placing them in a league tie with BYU and Texas Tech. Colorado is set to play Saturday.
The game was a tight affair until Iowa State capitalized on an intercepted pass from West Virginia's Garrett Greene in the second half. Rocco Becht found Eli Green on consecutive plays of 12 and 34 yards, positioning the Cyclones for a decisive move.
A third-down holding call on West Virginia's Ayden Garnes gave Iowa State a golden opportunity. Hansen seized the moment, scoring on the next play and increasing their lead to 21-10 early in the fourth quarter.
Iowa State's defense stood firm against West Virginia's offense which had amassed 389 yards on the ground a week ago at Oklahoma State. This time, they were limited to just 148 rushing yards against the league's top defense, the Cyclones.
Jontez Williams, with his third interception of the season, gave the Cyclones the advantage they needed. Hansen then ran for 20 yards, capping it with a 2-yard scoring run for a 28-10 lead with 4:42 left on the clock.
Hansen, who also scored on an 11-year run in the second quarter, finished with 96 rushing yards, just one yard less than his career-high set last week against Baylor. He ran for a total of 67 yards all of last season, making his performance this year nothing short of remarkable.
Rocco Becht, son of West Virginia Sports Hall of Famer Anthony Becht, completed 18 of 26 passes for 265 yards, including a 60-yard scoring toss to Jaylin Noel.
With their seventh straight road game win, the Cyclones have shown their mettle on both sides of the ball. They will host UCF on Saturday night, looking to extend their winning streak.
